Asking For Help–Why Is It So Hard? Greenfield Parent Meeting February Topic

At the February FUSE meeting in Greenfield, Stephanie Gustin will join us to talk about a challenging topic for many families—asking for help.  Stephanie will  guide us through a discussion about the struggles around asking for and receiving help from others, including informal and formal support systems, for our children.  Topics will include utilizing support services across a variety of life needs (school, medical, in home services, respite care, etc.), the practical implications of asking for help and utilizing programs and services, how it feels to ask for or need help, the benefits to our loved ones by accepting help, and the implications of not utilizing the help that may be available to us. Join us for a thought provoking discussion!

Speaker Bio:

Since Stephanie Gustin was in junior high school, she has had a very strong passion for assisting individuals with developmental and physical disabilities. She started as a classroom helper while in school, and was eventually founder and president of the Cougar Connection Club at Greenfield-Central High School (which later became Best Buddies).  Stephanie graduated from Greenfield-Central High School in 2002 and went on to attend Ivy Tech to study the Science of Human Services. After college, she worked for a couple of disability service providers where she held many positions, from support staff to residential director. Stephanie later took some time off to care for her children at home, but remained very active in the disabilities community. She has been an instructional assistant in a special education classroom and has assisted people with disabilities to participate in a community theater group. Stephanie is currently finishing her BA in Psychology for Applied Behavior Analysis. Stephanie’s personal goal in life is to ensure that all individuals with disabilities and their loved ones receive full support and assistance in all aspects of their lives.  Stephanie lives in Greenfield and has been happily married to her high school sweetheart for 12 years.  Together they have 3 wonderful children who make their lives whole.
